TVET: FG conducts entrance exam into FTCs for 30,000 students

The Federal Government on Saturday conducted examinations for students who are interested in its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) into Federal Technical Colleges nationwide.

About 30,000 students sat for the examination conducted by the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) nationwide.

Through the TVET initiative, students in technical colleges would be equipped with industry-relevant skills while reshaping the country’s approach to human capital development.

Successful students would enjoy free tuition, accommodation, and feeding for students in Federal and State Technical Colleges as part of the TVET programme.

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of NABTEB, Dr. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, told reporters after monitoring the examination at Federal Technical College, Orozo, Abuja, on Saturday that the results will be out in 21 days.

Mohammed emphasised that the examination is not just a means of selecting students but also a strategic tool for determining individual strengths and aligning them with specific trades.

He further noted that the significance of the programme lies in its potential to reverse Nigeria’s overdependence on imported skills and products.

“If you pass, we will look at your skill and study your score. We have already collected certain data from each candidate, and that will help us determine whether they are suited for electrical installation, tailoring, solar maintenance, or other vocational areas.

“No nation succeeds economically without artisans, craftsmen, and technicians. They are the backbone of any country’s gross domestic product (GDP). No nation succeeds without these classes of people.

“In Nigeria, we depend so much on paper qualification. That era of paper qualifications is gone. We are now in the era of ‘what can you offer or do to add to our GDP?”

Mohammed assured that adequate planning is in place to absorb the expected influx into the technical colleges, noting that a selection committee comprising principals of federal technical colleges, NABTEB officials, and representatives from the Ministry of Education will oversee the admission process.

“In 21 days, we hope to release the results. Only then will we be able to determine how many candidates will proceed to the next stage. It’s too early to say now, but our belief is that by this time next year, this paper-based process will become fully digitised,” he said.

He said as part of the TVET programme, students will undergo training of varying durations from six months, nine months, or one year, depending on their chosen trade.

Upon completion, he said they will be provided with starter packs and possible access to business loans.

“This is not just about skills acquisition. It’s about job creation and economic empowerment. Those who complete the programme can either be employed by the government or set up their own businesses with the support structures being put in place,” he stated.

Mohammed lamented the prevailing trend where simple construction jobs, such as tiling and POP installations, are outsourced to foreign nationals, even though Nigerian youth possess the energy and potential to perform the same tasks if properly trained and certified.

“This reawakening is to ensure that Nigeria becomes a production country. We bring fillers from Togo and even our POP we bring the people from Benin Republic and we have many youths here that can do these jobs to earn a living.

“Being in the building industry is big business. With initiatives like this, our young people will soon be able to take back these roles and earn a decent living.

“I believe that this project is the right decision by the federal government and I encourage everyone to support the government in this initiative.”

He revealed that the government’s plan includes creating an enabling environment for certified technical talents to practice and thrive locally.

He cited major national projects, such as the gas pipeline initiative, which would soon rely heavily on indigenous artisans and technicians.

“But the question is, are they certified? That’s why this programme is critical. Certification builds trust. No one wants to risk their resources on unverified skills,” he stated.

Wamakko donates building to NABTEB in Sokoto…pledges continued support for Technical Education

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, on Saturday, donated a fully furnished office complex to the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) in Sokoto.

Wamakko, a former Governor of Sokoto state, speaking during the official handover ceremony of the building, reaffirmed his long-standing commitment to promoting technical and vocational education in Nigeria.

He described the gesture as a continuation of his lifelong passion for education, which he said remains the foundation of national development and youth empowerment.

Wamakko said: “This handover ceremony is not the end of our relationship; it is the beginning of a partnership that will yield tremendous benefits for technical and vocational education in Nigeria.

“The only sustainable way to empower people is to give them skills. You can give a man money or food, but if you give him a skill, you have given him a future.”

The former Sokoto governor explained that his decision to build and donate the edifice to NABTEB stemmed from his belief in the transformative power of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

He noted that empowering young Nigerians with practical skills was the surest way to tackle unemployment, poverty, and underdevelopment.

He said: “As a governor, education was at the heart of my administration’s agenda. We built and renovated schools, recruited teachers, and supported thousands of students with scholarships.

“That commitment has continued in the Senate through my constituency projects and personal interventions, including the establishment of North-West University, Kalambaina.”

Wamakko added that by strengthening NABTEB, he was helping to strengthen the entire technical education sector.

“NABTEB sets the standards for business, technical, and vocational education. By supporting NABTEB, we are directly supporting Nigeria’s future workforce and productivity,” he said.

He pledged to mobilise other lawmakers, former governors, and business leaders to support NABTEB’s mission.

“This donation is just the beginning. I will continue to stand by NABTEB to ensure it has the facilities and resources needed to fulfill its mandate,” he added.

Receiving the building on behalf of the Board, NABTEB’s Registrar/Chief Executive, Dr. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, described the donation as a monumental act of patriotism and a testament to Wamakko’s visionary leadership.

Mohammed said: “This day marks a significant milestone in NABTEB’s history. Distinguished Senator Wamakko has shown that true leadership is not about position but about impact.

“This building is not just bricks and mortar, it is a beacon of hope and a foundation for a stronger future in technical and vocational education.”

The Registrar explained that the new office would greatly enhance NABTEB’s operational capacity by improving administrative efficiency, expanding staff accommodation, and providing better facilities for training and documentation.

“With this building, we will be able to process examinations, results, and certifications faster and more efficiently.

“It will also serve as a training hub for capacity building and as a secure centre for the management of examination records,” Mohammed said.

The NABTEB boss pledged that the Board would ensure optimal utilisation and maintenance of the facility.

“We will not take this gift for granted. Every part of this edifice will be put to productive use in line with our mandate,” he said.

He also called on other well-meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations to emulate Wamakko’s example by investing in the nation’s education sector.

“Government alone cannot do it. The future of technical and vocational education depends on collective effort and sustained investment,” Mohammed said.

The ceremony, attended by government officials, traditional leaders, education stakeholders, and community members, was held at the new NABTEB office complex in Sokoto.

Wamakko’s donation is expected to significantly strengthen NABTEB’s presence in Northern Nigeria and support its goal of producing a skilled and self-reliant workforce capable of driving industrial and economic growth.

NABTEB Registrar advises automotive, locomotive Engineers to do more to diversify Nigerian economy

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), Dr. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed on Wednesday, advised Automotive and Locomotive Engineers’ Institute (AutoEI), to do more to meet Nigeria’s goal of achieving a sustainable and diversified economy.

Mohammed gave the charge while delivering a speech at the 15th National Conference and Annual General Meeting of the AutoEI at the African Centre of Excellence on New Pedagogies in Engineering Education (ACENPEE), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State.

He urged the automotive and locomotive engineering institute to embrace innovation while maintaining the highest professional standards.

According to him, the theme of the conference: “Automotive and Locomotive Engineering Innovations for Sustainable Blue Economy,” could not be more timely and relevant.

He called on the engineers to mentor the next generation of engineers and technicians, and advocate for policies that support local automotive and locomotive industries.

He said that the synergy between NABTEB and AutoEI presented an unprecedented collaboration opportunities for mutual benefit and national development impact.

He said NABTEB and AutoEI can partner in joint curricula development, professional certification pathways, industry-driven skills assessment, technology transfer facilitation and innovation incubation.

“Create joint programmes that support entrepreneurship and innovation in automotive and locomotive engineering, fostering indigenous technology development.”

Mohammed encouraged the conference to focus on solutions that are not only technologically advanced but also environmentally responsible and economically viable for Nigerian conditions.

He said that automotive and locomotive sectors have unique opportunities to lead in: Clean transportation technologies, smart mobility solutions for urban and rural areas, integration of renewable energy in transportation systems, and
development of local manufacturing capabilities.

He reaffirmed NABTEB’s commitment to supporting the automotive and locomotive engineering profession through quality technical education and relevant programmes.

Mohammed added: “As Nigeria positions itself as a key player in the global blue economy, the automotive and locomotive sectors represent critical pillars for sustainable economic growth, job creation, and technological advancement.

“The blue economy presents unprecedented opportunities for our nation, with its vast coastal resources and strategic geographic position.

“The Automotive and Locomotive Engineers’ Institute (AutoEI) stands at the forefront of developing the transportation infrastructure necessary to harness these opportunities effectively.

“The National Business and Technical Examinations Board was established with a clear mandate: to bridge the critical gap between academic learning and the practical skills demanded by Nigeria’s industrial and economic development needs.

“As the premier institution for technical and vocational education assessment in Nigeria, NABTEB recognizes that the foundation of any thriving automotive and locomotive engineering sector lies in a robust pipeline of skilled technicians, craftsmen, and engineering support personnel.

NABTEB releases 2025 results, surpasses previous year’s enrollment by 37%

The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB, on Thursday, released the results of its 2025 in-school National Business Certificate/National Technical Certificate (NBC/NTC) examinations.

The Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the NABTEB, Dr Mohammed Aminu Mohammed while officially declaring the results released, said the outcome showed tremendous improvement in performance of the candidates during the exams and a 37 per cent increase in the 2025 enrollment figures compared to 2024.

Mohammed said that about 80,000 out of the over 92,000 candidates that enrolled for the 2025 June/July examinations had credits in English and Mathematics.

Also, he said that 61,104 candidates representing 68.18% of the candidates that sat for the National Business Certificate (NBC) and National Technical Certificate (NTC) examinations had five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

Mohammed said the 2025 performance surpassed that of the June/July 2024 NBC/NTC examinations results, where 44,000 candidates representing 65.34% scored five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics, and 62,235 candidates, representing 92.42% obtained five credits and above with or without English Language and Mathematics.

He said that the Board also achieved increase in the number of candidates that enrolled for the examinations and number of centres used for the conduct of the exams compared to its enrollment figures and number of centres used last year.

He revealed that out of the total number of candidates graded for the examinations,
57,651 (62.07%) were males while 35,224 (37.93%) were females.

He further revealed that there was a significant decrease in the number of cases of examination malpractices in 2025 compared to the immediate past year.

Mohammed said: “The NABTEB examinations were conducted nationwide from Monday, 16th June to Thursday, 17th July 2025.

“A total of 92,875 candidates registered for the examinations in 1,892 centres as against 67,751 in 1,708 centers in 2024, which represents 37.08% and 10.77% increase in enrollment and number of centres respectively.

“Analyses of the enrollment indicate that candidates enrolled for 16 Engineering Trades, 7 Construction Trades, 9 Miscellaneous Trades, 4 Business Trades, and 16 General Education Subjects.

“A total of 89,621 candidates were graded for the examinations, which represents 96.50% of the total enrolment.

“Furthermore, 57,651 (62.07%) males and 35,224 (37.93%) females enrolled for the examinations.

“In English language, 85,476 were graded with an overall pass of 79,575 (93.10%) and 5,901 (6.90%) fail. However, in comparison with the 2024 results, 63,866 (95.87%) pass and 2,753 (4.13%) fail.

“In Mathematics, 85,805 were graded, the overall pass is 81,172 (94.60%), and the fail is 4,633 (5.40%), but in comparison to 2024 results, 60,849 (91.39%) pass and 5,738 (8.61%) fail.

“This infers that more candidates passed Mathematics while fewer candidates passed English Language this year when compared to last year’s examination results.

“The analyses further revealed that 61,104 candidates representing 68.18% of the candidates that sat for the NBC/NTC examinations scored five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics.

“A total of 74,633 candidates obtained 5 credits and above with or without English Language and Mathematics, which represents 83.28% of the candidates who sat for the same examinations.

“Comparatively, this performance is better when compared to the previous year’s June/July 2024 NBC/NTC examinations results, where 44,000 candidates representing 65.34% scored five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics, and 62,235 candidates, representing 92.42% obtained five credits and above with or without English Language and Mathematics.

“It was observed that 435 (0.47%) candidates out of the 92,875 who enrolled were involved in 516 incidences of examination malpractices, as against the 2024 record of 349 (0.52%) candidates’ involvement in 524 incidences.

“This is a decrease in the incidence of examination malpractices as recorded in this year 2025 June/July NBC/NTC examinations.”

Mohammed further observed that in today’s 21st-century world, driven by innovation and knowledge economy, the need for comprehensive Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) which exposes candidates to needed technical and vocational skills is highly crucial.

He also disclosed that the NABTEB has commenced registration of candidates for the 2025 November/December NBC/NTC and ANBC/ANTC examinations.

He said: “Prospective candidates can access the NABTEB portal
@novdec.nabteb.gov.ng or visit any State or Zonal Office to obtain guidelines for registration.”

He thanked the Ministers of Education for their “unwavering support, especially in the launch of the new TVET initiatives on Friday, 30th May 2025, which has given TVET the needed boost to translate Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda in empowering Nigerian youths with 21st-century skills necessary for closing the skills gap in our industries.”

He also lauded his colleagues from the Federal Ministry of Education, NABTEB management, and staff for their roles in achieving the milestone of releasing the results in record time.
